Currently played by Can Yaman, Fabian is tall with red-brown wavy mid-length hair and brown eyes. Scars litter his body and his face, most of them from slashing or stab/puncture wounds. He's usually unshaven and somewhat unwashed and tends to smell like liquor, pricey cologne, seasalt and... His own musk, let's say. His voice is a clear tenor that he's incredible at projecting, boisterous yet pleasant and tactful. He wears a captain's jacket and other pirate getup, including a ton of jewelry; golden chains and colourful gemstones. His most favoured are rubies and amethyst. His shirts are always open a few buttons. He is extremely outgoing, friendly, and charming, and impulsive enough to say yes to just about any plan. He is often drunk.

Fabian was born in Tidewatch, a city half underwater and comprised largely of merfolk, into a noble family. His mother was a councilwoman with significant sway over merfolk politics, second only to the leader of the council. His father owned the largest shipbuilding company on the island. He was indoctrinated into this lifestyle from a young age, expected to work for his father on the family business until the time came for him to take his mother’s seat at the council.
Secretly, Fabian had other plans. He loathed all rules and expectations and longed for the freedom of the sea, for the horizon beyond all of this. Other merfolk could swim freely, so why couldn’t he? He didn’t want to grow up and enforce the status quo, or to be any part of a council that would look the other way or even participate in slavery. And the meetings. The meetings would be so long and boring! He was already bored out of his mind at school, acting out with picking fights and pulling pranks just to entertain himself. After getting suspended from school for yet another incident, his parents punished him harshly and expressed deep frustration and disappointment in him. Feeling rejected and like a failure at only the age of 13, he ran away.
First, he swam away as far as he could, then snuck onto a cargo ship to go further. He kept going, as far from home as he could get. While wandering a far-off coastal town and trying to find something to eat, he encountered a boy about his age, Alexei. He was as much of a rascal as Fabian, perhaps even moreso, and knew a clever way to steal food. The two became instant friends, laughing and getting into and out of trouble everywhere they went.
They stayed in that town for a little longer, but both boys wanted to travel, so they stole a small sailboat. Their intention was to travel the whole world, but within the first week, their tiny boat encountered a storm it could not weather. The boys’ sailing skills were not up to snuff, and though neither were at risk of drowning, they were now stranded in the middle of the ocean with a broken boat. They were eventually spotted and rescued by a pirate crew led by a woman with a gruff, weathered charm, known as the Red Hawk. The pirates soon recognized the boys as one of them- adventurers, free spirits, and they were allowed to stay on the significantly bigger boat, which afforded them more safety in those early years. It was lucky, as most pirate ships didn't allow young boys, or would have made them slaves, but Red Hawk must have had a soft spot for them. That, and women also generally weren't allowed on ships, and yet Red Hawk was Captain, so clearly this wasn't a ship that followed the typical pirate culture. Fabian and Alexei became real pirates, turning their stealing-for-fun into professional pillaging, their wanderlust into a marathon of travel.
Eventually, the charismatic Fabian worked his way up the ranks of the crew, pulling Alexei up with him. When the two were twenty, their ship was attacked by the elven navy, and while they eventually managed to fight them off, Red Hawk and a good portion of the crew were lost in the battle. Once they buried their dead and recovered from the grief, an emergency election was held, in which Fabian and Alexei received equal votes for Captain. The crew was impressed by their bravery and skill in the battle. They offered to be Co-Captains, and the crew was fine with this, so long as they could have two Quartermasters to represent them. Unorthodox, but Fabian always had been, and so long as all were happy, that was what mattered. He was over the moon to be leading a ship with his best friend, and they fixed up Red Hawk's ship, renaming it Hawk's Legacy. The youngest pirate captains to exist, Fabian and Alexei set out to become the most successful, traveled, feared pirates in history. Fabian also had grown a strong disdain for elves and wanted to make them pay, especially with regard to slavery. They began taking in strays much the way their old Captain had taken them in, often freed from slaving ships, forming a ragtag crew, a new found family.
They became just as successful as they wanted to be, and it felt like they were on top of the world, that nothing could stop them. The crew was happy, the Captains were re-elected time and time again, and they became the legends they dreamed of being. They saw a few long boring periods at sea, but they also explored the far isles, partied, and saw plenty of bloody battles. Alexei and Fabian became known for their terrifying strategy of swimming around targeted ships in mer-form and having their crew infiltrate the deck and knock as many sailors off of it as possible, which Fabian and Alexei would then drown or slice up with claws. Fabian let members of his crew come and go as they wished, never holding anyone down- except Alexei. Alexei was his brother, someone he could no longer imagine his life without.
On their greatest voyage yet, setting out across the Vermillion Ocean to search of new land the elves hadn’t touched yet, the mother of all storms struck them. Hail, wind, waves five storeys tall. Even their best seafaring skills and their trusty ship were no match for the ocean’s wrath, as though they had been cursed by Astus herself for their hubris. Their ship broke apart and sank, and Fabian lost sight of his crew completely. In a panic, he took to the water, desperately searching with magical light for anyone still alive.
He found Alexei- pierced through the gut with a broken-off piece of the mast. Fabian held him as they were swept up by dark currents that took them far from where their ship had wrecked. It didn’t matter. If he didn’t have Alexei, what did he have? He tried to put on a smile for the other man, reassuring him that it would all be okay, but for once, Fabian’s performance was completely unconvincing as tears mixed with seawater. A tendril of blood left Alexei’s mouth as he closed his eyes, never to open them again, and the two sank down, into the dark trenches below.
Who could say how long Fabian stayed there, at the bottom of the ocean, holding his best friend’s body to him until it went as cold as the water around them. He could not bring himself to let him go, to face the fact that he had just truly lost everything.
